Staying fresh - Globe and Mail, Report on Business
Nothing says freshness like a washed-up child star.
To celebrate its 25th anniversary, Canadian French fry chain New York Fries launched a campaign this week featuring a noticeably weathered Gary Coleman in print and poster ads, with the slogan, “After 25 years some things are still fresh.”
Back when the chain launched, Mr. Coleman was making his mark on the sitcom Diff'rent Strokes . In the online component launching Aug. 3, he appears on Facebook in 3-D. Users can print out a New York Fries coupon and hold it up to their webcam, which triggers a video of him spilling his fries and reading their future like tea leaves.
“There is a bit of irony. He doesn't really communicate freshness,” said Martin Beauvais, creative director at the Toronto offices of Zig, which is behind the campaign. “There's a bit of a wink there. He might not be as fresh as he was, but the fries are.”
