New York Fries Opens 200th Store - Foodservice World

TORONTO - It wasn't too long ago that Jay Gould purchased the rights to a New York City-based QSR concept specializing in french fries, which he then launched in Toronto. It was 1984 to be exact, and tomorrow, November 6, 2009, Gould's Toronto-based company will be opening its 200th store in Hong Kong.

The outlet is the second New York Fries in the Hong Kong market. In 2008, New York Fries signed a master license deal with Hong Kong-based Next Step Limited to open multiple retail units in Hong Kong and Macao. Next Step has planned 10 more units over the next five years in Hong Kong. A move into mainland China remains a future goal.

"We are thrilled to be able to celebrate our 200th store milestone with our franchisees in Hong Kong," says Gould. "Our first Hong Kong location has broken numerous sales records, confirming that this market responds well to our concept. We are excited for the continued development in this exciting market."

To what does Gould credit the success? Fresh potatoes are cut in every store every day, leaving the skin on for added flavour and nutrients. The fries are cooked in non-hydrogenated, trans-fat-free sunflower oil, using a unique three-stage cooking process to create the ideal fry texture - crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside.
